Video tutorial: cultivation

  • Pleased to report I solved my issues and have created a new cultivation file for the area I was working on. I don't know how many trees are there, in my run through late last night I had trees set at minimum in my AFS2 settings. I will re- check that today. I most definitely want to see trees in my city area, if my OSM data does not have many forest areas we need a way to produce trees without doing individual trees, that will just be too tedious.

I know cultivation improvements will be coming; I would like to suggest that one of the first additions be tall buildings for city skyscrapers if that is doable.

Thanks again for the tutorial Rodeo plus the encouragement, and Ed as well for your support!

Yes, any help with adding business districts to the scenery will be a big improvement to the flat towns and cities. Water towers, shopping centers, schools, churches, bridges, etc.

    Ray

    You're welcome, Ken.

    Cheers, Ed

  • Is there a way to get this data from Google Maps? OpenStreetMaps does not have any data for building positions in any of the nearby towns, but Google Maps does show them. Any help would be appreciated. :)

i doubt it but do some googling around other sources of data for your particular country. That's how i found the Ordnance Survey data for the UK.

  • How do I generate the TSC file with the proper coordinates, or do I have to edit them manually? If manually, what do I use as the vector points, the corners of the OSM? Not clear on this. Sorry if I sound stupid.

    Andrew

  • Where do the 3d buildings come from when you generate cultivation data. The reason I am asking is because there are a TON of 'free' buildings in sketchup that perhaps could be used as 3d buildings in our cultivation files.

  • Hi Andrew,

if you don't plan to go into graphics, follow this description:

Adding a simple airport without graphics

    Rodeo

Thanks Rodeo, I will give that a try in a bit. I have done a fairly large area with 1m to 0.5m photo scenery, but it looks pretty flat down low. Unfortunately, OpenStreetMaps only shows larger buildings in that area, hospitals, schools, malls etc. Still it would be better than nothing. Google Maps has pretty much everything, but I can't find a way to get the data, seems they have it locked down.

Rodeo , you must have found some really good coffee lately :)

Everyone on here should really appreciate the amount of time that you put into helping others, and how much time you put behind the scenes to make Aerofly a success that many may not know. So, I'll say to you one very big THANK YOU!!

On behalf of Torsten, Marc, and the rest of the IPACS team, we would all like to thank you for your continued support.

  • For sure what Jeff said! Thank you Rodeo.

I think I am missing something here, probably something dumb. I have tried 3 times now. I get the TOC file fine, I have edited the TSC, made sure all the textures are in the right place, and I am still not getting any buildings or lights at night. Can someone take a look at these and see what I messed up?

    Andrew

    Filename is incorrect.

It should be MAP.TOC not MAP.TOC.TXT

Same goes for you drhotwing1 :) - you are always there to assist others, it is much appreciated.

  • Hi Andrew,

do not forget to move a building_textures folder with the ttx files into your airport directory.

This is not mentioned in my simple airport wiki, because cultivation came later and was not part of this early approach.

But check this video to make this more clear: Aerofly FS 2 cultivation

Additionally I added a dummy runway. I could not test it here in the office, but hope it will work. ;)

  • Thank you Rodeo and everyone! I got it working. I knew it was something stupid I did. Upon looking closer at the TSC I found it was looking for textures in "building_texture_folder", but the actual location was "building_textures". A quick change and it is all working, buildings and lights!

Now, can anyone point me to something better than OpenStreetMaps for the OSM/GIS data? It is just very sparse for my area. I have been looking at USGS, but have not found anything yet.

  • Hi Rodeo

Many thanks for the video. I've just started my first attempt at cultivation and I have a couple of questions:

    1. I don't want to exclude any area so ..... does the exclude.kml file have to relate to an area inside the area selected in OSM? My exclude.kml is one I downloaded from the forum for somewhere else in the world.

    2. You say that the building_textures folder is in your airport design package. Is this to be found in the "Downloads" section of this forum? I have the "Scenery Workshop" and the "Hawaii Airports" but I can't find it in either of those.

Edited 5 times, last by Ian C ().

  • Hi Ian. We are doing the same thing today, my first cultivation attempts too. I will be watching this thread with interest as I have the same questions. I will add another...

    3. Do you need a dummy runway file? Or can you just work with the basic airport .tsc
