My vision for the aerofly community

  • Hi all,

thinking still about all the free USGS data I have this vision:

    1. Some people download state by state of the 1m aerial images and convert them up to level 14 step by step.

We still need a programmer to create the coordinate files for geoconvert.

USGS data can be published free, just give credits to them.

And now we have the server installation flight-sim.org where all the users can download the data.

    2. Another group concentrates to increase the elevation mesh to a higher level. In combination with the aerial images this is a boost to the visual perception.

    3. Now we have this overwhelming tool FSCloudPort of Spit40, and some users may add the relevant airports for the current state.

    4. There are some specialists amongst us for cultivation. I suggest to do this in separate files for lights, vegetation and buildings.

This will allow us the replace or modify them separately.

    5. This is our user server to publish all the stuff together: https://flight-sim.org/

Similar jobs could be done for another parts of the world, but in the USA all the data are available without legal problems.

So all users can benefit from this work.

What do you think about this, are you ready to join such a group? What is the ranking of the states?

    I'm curious about your opinion.

  • Hi all,

thinking still about all the free USGS data I have this vision:

This is an approach I would really acknowledge, as it's something we can show off and make available to the masses. There are quite some goodies floating around here which are really exciting but restricted to the use of a hand full of handpicked members of closed groups.

I am certainly not in a position to lead such a group, but if cheer number crunching and testing are required I would gladly crank in. Sub-tasks just had to be prepared in a way that even dummies can take them, but I think this should be possible.

I don't know if IPACS would acknowledge such a project (we never know), but if so it would make sense to coordinate the effort with them. It wouldn't make sense to start with, say, Florida, if we know they will publish it as a DLC a couple of weeks later.

Continuing on priority it might make sense to continue from those regions already available, i.e. from the West coast to the East or from the North-Eastern to the West (perhaps including the Great Lakes area). This would provide connected regions for flying.

Once more thanks for that effort.

    Kind regards, Michael

If you provide the free source data for Germany I would be in ;(;(;(.

There's (at least) one more country qualifying for global coverage that would be New Zealand. As far as I know it has global data for the whole country available. On the other hand I think Godzone/Rob Corn is already working on this, thus it would neither make sense nor be fair, to start a competiting effort.

Italy might have free global imagery available, too, but not sure about this.

    Kind regards, Michael

  • I'm confused (I'm one of the dummy's) any thing downloaded from the new site does or does not need to be covered? I was reading about the tool and did not understand very much. I do not want to wast my time downloading places that do not look good. So a simple yes or no please>

  • So, which side / tool ... cloudport ?

who will decide its " looks good or dont " ? for you ?

The best is : dont "waste you time" in the internet ...

go flying, or do something with your family :) :)

  • To be absolutely honest - while that all sounds well-thought out, you have to be careful relying on volunteers from the community. At the end of the day, we're all still consumers with a common interest in Aerofly FS2 - a commercial product. Freeware developers who wish to undertake such a project shouldn't be obligated nor expected to complete it.

That's a valid objection. However, things might be organized similar as it was done with the FSClouldPort project. Make a base grid (based on one of the grid tools) and provide tasks for people to complete. There may or may not people jump in and out, but based on the FSClouldPort project there were always new people jumping in while others left.

One could even provide a similar graphical tool with squares to take, mark as taken and later as done with a link to the download from Higgy's server.

This would be of course quite a management and coding effort - as Phil may tell. But it would be a professional and effective way of organizing it.

    There are sure alternative possibilities.

  • What does not look good it building in the grass that sit low. What I do like are all the places that came with with FS 2, all the downloaded payware from steam.

I love DEN but do not need the lights. Or at some airports the people or cars/tucks but they are nice to have. I just would like a nice real view from the air>

If I understood the geoconvert tool right I download a file learn and use some other tool and lean and use the geoconvert tool. But I really do not understand any of it.?(

Summer is all most here so I will spend more time outside.:)

Edited once, last by Dholm: Yes, I do mean the airports for the cloudport site. (April 15, 2018 at 3:30 PM).

  • I think ... you didnt try EDXE from Rodeo ? ? ?

I clearly didn't otherwise I wouldn't have said what I said. ;) Now I still didn't try it (I am not interested in small area's) but I watched a video of it and I have to admit it looks nice. My opinion was mainly based on screenshots I've seen of various freeware addons. Like the one Rodeo posted in his opening post which isn't (imho) an advertisement for freeware scenery. But well, my bad. There apparently ARE nice freeware sceneries. But still, it doesn't come close to what Orbx is creating (which is quite logical since Orbx is a company with lots of people working for it).

  • I didnt believe that orbx makes such a good immersion, details, objects and buildings on the right place in AF2 ... like Rodeo and

me did in EDXE, its to much detailed and work for a company ( because they want maximum profit and didnt fly on

this airports they make ... since 25 years ( like me on this ) .

Dont get me wrong , I am also a big fan of orbx , and pay A LOT ! last years for scenery and 3 planes ( p3d ).

But i didnt fly Boing or Airbus, so my thing is fly in sim what i fly in real ... So little airports are nice for me, so i can fly virtual to

the places with a TB10 , Cessna or Microlight / Autogyro , Glider, Trike, or Parawing , where I go next week in real :).

  • Has anyone followed up with the newly retired or newly available IT guy that was trying to volunteer to do some programming for us? Maybe he would like to work on the USGS conversion/automation to IPACS standards for scenery.

  • Hi,

I mentioned our requirement in that thread, but there was no feedback.

    Just to avoid some misunderstandings:

I never thought of doing the entire 50 states of the USA systematically, there is no need for that.

It would already be a success, to process a handfull of selected areas which are not covered by OrbX or IPACS.

Or even a single area where we put all of our stuff together.

Of course there is no obligation. This is our hobby and the result of the work should be freeware.

The big advantage: The 'end user' can download a complete package from flight-sim.org, without missing some parts like cultivation, ground textures...

And of course usage is free. If you don't like it, don't use it. ;):)
