Blender-OSM

  • Hi all,

I came across a Blender addon that costs $5.90 US and does the following:

    • The addon imports buildings from OpenStreetMap. Building height and number of floors are used to create the final scene. Composition into 3D parts for a building with the complex structure is also processed. A large number of roof shapes is supported. If a terrain is provided, buildings are placed on the terrain automatically.
    • The addon downloads and imports real world terrain data with resolution about 30 meter.
    • River, lakes, forests, vegetation are imported as polygons. If a terrain is provided, they are projected on the terrain.
    • Imported roads, paths and railways have width. They are represented by Blender curves with a profile object. If a terrain is provided, roads are projected on the terrain.

To purchase the addon go here BLENDER-OSM.

The addon does what it say's, it's working for me :)

    Cheers,

    Paul

  • The addon extracts terrain mesh and OSM data.

Basically I am able to extract a whole city with buildings having the correct floors(levels) shape and so forth.

I then export it as a .DAE file and add textures/changes in Sketchup Make 2017 (free).

Blender OSM interface: open image to view full panel.

    Opened in Sketchup:

    It's the best $5.90 I ever spent.

  • Thanks for the explanation. How do we use .DAE file and convert it for use with Aerofly FS 2?

  • Great scenery and even without any flicker!

Did you import that scenery with ModelConverterX?

Went from Blender-OSM to SketchUp to ModelConverterX.

It's a quick process, just need to add texture to buildings in SketchUp. Apparently the Blender-OSM developer will add automatic texture to buildings in the upcoming Pro version.

It's been a learning curve for me, at least I can now create buildings either by hand in SketchUp or have Blender do it with OSM data.

  • Goose/Tom, any progress with easily creating tall building sets with this blender add-on? Does it still work after the latest FS2 update?

Current FS2 buildings and houses have window lights at night - do the blender-based tall building also have window lights at night?

  • I bought Blender-OSM and it was fun to try out. The main limitation at the moment is presence of height data in the OSM export. If there's no height data, you'll just get a building shapes all at the same height.

With the current version, no texturing is applied so it's not yet ready for direct use.

I wonder if Arno from fsdeveloper.com could adapt the Export-to-TGI that he has in MCX to use it directly in Blender as a plugin exporter?

I took a look at writing a Blender plugin. If we knew the full TGI format it would be possible.

Arno used what we know about the text TGI format for ModelConverter. This only covers a sub-set of the full TGI format, which would be needed for a full Blender exporter.

  • Have you had a look at Blender OSM Premium.

  • Kloot, I think I need to go the Blender OSM route for tall buildings as the ScenProc route with toc files has them fading beyond ~6km. Have you done textures before? Will they work in FS2? Curious about the Blender OSM process and effort level.
