I think this thread should also be pinned. It is already rather long but there is good information in it about the use of AeroScenery (Jeff, are you listening?).

Indeed. I'll pin it as well.

Hi,
First of all, a great tool, many thanks!
I've got a short question.
Is it a problem for the created scenery if I create the levels in steps?
For instance I've downloaded a size 9 tile with level 18 resolution to produce Aerofly levels 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14. This process will obviously take a lot of time in one run. Is it ok to geoconvert first for example level 9, 11, 12 and 13 and on the next day level 14 not in one run? Of course I would put the files all in the same directory.
Thank you!

I do this myself sometimes. It's completely fine.

I do it that way as a normal method. I let the pc crunch at night for the level 14 and 15 areas. When I wake up I come in an see if I see something green on the screen then go make coffee if using the GeoConverter. For AeroScenery it usually is well behaved when left alone to produce the very high res files.

Ray

Thanks a lot for clarification!

I would even say it’s highly advisable to first geoconvert low and fast levels like 9 and 11 to ensure everything runs smooth with your setup.
You can then launch AFS2 and check the result before letting Geoconverter mill higher levels during the night or during the work day...
Cheers

I suggest pinning a new thread that outlines the most recent method of creating and converting with a link to the most recent software. And Nick would have the ability to edit it. I used Areoscenery when it first came out but the program has changed enough that trying to work through all the nuances and question through 26 pages of info made me abandon it. Just my experience and idea.

Yep I agree, I'm still trying to get version 1.0 done, in which more stuff has changed.
When that is finally released I will create a new thread, do some proper documentation and YouTube videos.
Sadly real life keeps interfering with my Aerofly / Aeroscenery time
rainier You shouldn't need to go through this thread to get started though.
Just download the installer
https://github.com/nickhod/aerosc…AeroScenery.msi
and follow the simple walk through on this page.

The onlyest thing, what i don't understand, is: Why i should choose many AFS Levels ( 9, 11,13,14 ) for one grid and not only one? Why not directly simple the highest resolution?

To maintain performance, Aerofly shows the lowest resolution tiles it can 'get away with' given your altitude.
Let's say you only created level 14 tiles. If you're at 30k feet (assuming no cloud cover) and pointed the aircraft down, the amount of level 14 tiles Aerofly need s to render is huge. If level 9 tiles are available it can use a far fewer number of those. You're not going to be able to see a difference in the end result as you're so high up.
It would be possible for Aerofly to generate low res tiles itself from higher res tiles. (There's no new data in them). It would lead to a horrible experience with people installing DLCs and having to wait 20 minutes before using it though. Geoconvert is just letting you do this up front.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh....... what i thought: like heightmaps - rhight? Like Renderlayer?

where can i find a windows msi to install please thx

All i see is files I cannot open

The first link leads to an msi file which you should be able to double click for direct installation (Windows 10).

Hello All,
I'm new with AreoScenery, first of all thx for making this tool !
I noticed some issues that when it comes to the stage where the GeoConvert tool is invoked, some tiles get processed and than it stops, no more % progress for countless hours but the memory usage and CPU activity remains very high. The GeoConvert tool is defo active, but not progressing anymore.
I tried this several times and it only completes on lower resolutions. Once you have a high zoom level there seems to be a race condition in the GeoConvert tool and it basically stops moving forward.
Dunno if this a known bug.
Many thanks,
Pummelchen

Hi,
I've reported the bugs in GeoConvert to IPACS. I'm hoping they will get around to fixing them at some point but unfortunately they haven't yet. (Feel free to open a separate post reporting directly to IPACS).
What I've found is that minimising, moving or resizing the GeoConvert window seems to cause these problems. If you don't touch the thing it often works as it should.
As far as running GeoConvert instances sequentially rather than multiple at once, look out for AeroScenery version 1.0, which is coming in the next few days.

We are already aware of this but it may be some time still before we look deeper into the Geoconvert tool
