How would you define the size of a grid square level 9?

  • I am working with AeroScenery for the first time and I selected four level 9 squares so it looks like it will take most of the day. Now I am wondering just how large is a level 9 square. Anyone know?

  • I kept digging and found this is a post by Rodeo . . .

    3. No, level 9 is not a multiple of 1 degree as we can see from the description above.

In longitudinal direction we have 512 steps. So calculated the extent of a level 9 tile you end up with 360 degrees / 512 = 0.703125 degrees.

This means close to the equator the extent of a single level 9 tile is about 78 km!

at the equator the width would be ~ 78 km or 42 nm.

  • ~78km at the equator seems right to me.

The time required for the "download and stitch images" actions of AeroScenery are mainly dependent on the image detail / zoom level that you're using. Remember that level 18 will take four times as long as 17, and 17 four times as long as 16 etc.

Level 17 for wider areas, then level 19 for airports is often a good compromise.

GeoConvert does take a long time if you choose to do levels 9 through to 15.
