Difference between airspeed and ground speed ? Check wind direction and strength.
That is ground speed. Air density, flight path angle, wind, etc. are responsible for that split.
If you go vertically the ground speed drops to zero, if you fly high the airspeed drops to zero, if you have wind well then windspeed + airspeed roughly gives ground speed.
if you have wind well then windspeed + airspeed roughly gives ground speed.
And to be a bit more precise, groundspeed = tailwind component + airspeed (corrected for altitude, instrument error, etc.). As the wind moves from a direct tailwind to a direct crosswind the tailwind component drops from windspeed to 0 (as a 1st approximation), and beyond that it becomes a headwind, which subtracts from airspeed to give groundspeed. You can get exact answers using the wind triangle taught to all pilots, or by using some vector algebra -- but don't ask me for details. It has been decades since I worked with that stuff for X-country flight planning. In the sim, I just take off and go! (I wish FS 2 aircraft could run out of fuel because then I would be motivated to do the old-fashioned flight planning...)
I find it strange that the airspeed tape is Ground Speed. Never seen that before. hmmm.

I agree, but really, the best solution is to fly in cockpit view and there is no ambiguity about what the airspeed indicator is measuring -- airspeed!
Of course, cockpit view covers a lot of that beautiful FS2 scenery, so I fly in fixed follow or chase plane view a lot just to get my fill of eye-candy...

Q400 has a HUD look outside and see instruments

If you are saying I'm "old school" I already know that!
I still navigate using pilotage and dead-reckoning...
All this time I thought that was airspeed on the tape, not in the box, on the tape. See the original post, the 100 is on the tape and in the box. Guess I am just getting old and loosing it. ha.

The box and tape show the indicated airspeed. I totally misread the question I think
Now, I should go to bed

I teach navigation at my air-club and guess what, yesterday night's topic was... DR and the wind triangle !
sometimes hard to motivate youngsters to draw a good ole' wind triangle, but better learn the basics before to let SkyDemon do it for you...
Cheers
Antoine
