How to fly using VOR?

  • Hello Everyone

    Can anyone over here all Pilots either Virtual or Real help me with proper guidance about how we can use VOR for navigation and for Landings in an easy way not in Tough words.

    I get very much confused about how to use it in any aircraft starting from BOEING to AIRBUS.

    A small help will be highly appreciated..

  • Dial in 115.80 and fly to and from San Francisco airport. The beacon is between the crossed parallel runways so it is good for visual line ups which will agree with your VOR to and from practice.

    The Cessna is the best plane to use to get used to the VORs.

    Oakland is 116.80 and is ten miles from the San Francisco beacon, with 115.80 on one navigation box and 116.80 on the other, you can fly from SFO with 031 and the from flag showing on one instrument dial and fly to Oakland with 031 and the to flag flying on the other instrument dial. The course to fly is 031.

    211 will take you back to SFO. The 031 and 211 are on opposite sides of the Cessna’s VOR display.

    YouTube videos explain the VOR well but try the Cessna and try turnIng the instrument dials and see the guidance from the instrument’s needles and things will work out.

    Both VOR needles are telling the pilot to correct a bit to the left. The little white triangles on the VOR instruments indicate from (top) and to (bottom).

    The best advice I ever got was 'Muggins Guide to VOR / ILS Flying''

    1) The dot in the middle of the dial is where you are.
    2) Where the needles cross on the dial is where you should be.

    3) Fly the dot to the needles.

    You have plenty of time - if you are below the glideslope, level off and you will soon intercept the beam. If you are above, increase your rate of descent by reducing power and / or adding some flap, and as the needle starts walking towards the dot, increase power to reduce the rate of descent to stay in the beam. Similarly, if the localiser needle is saying the beam is off to your left, watch for it walking back to the dot and start a steady left turn with about 3 dots to go to intercept the radial you want. Practice makes perfect.
