no , i'm operating on a USB on a macbook
You mean extern usb drive? Its mounted?
Few weeks ago i had issue with a external usb ssd because it was not unmounted correctly, my mac started with a black screen. I repaired the drive at windows pc.
The reason was I formatted it with old master boot record, i formatted it again with newer gpt from mac boot options.

I'm not a Mac users but in Windows I would check that the drive letter it still the same. With removable USB devices you need to make sure that the drive letter remains the same so that Steam can find the installation at the exact same file path location. If you unplug the device and plug it back in it may no longer be the same drive letter, especially if you connect other drives in the mean time that "steal" the drive letter.
