787 bank hard to the right every time I disconnect the autopilot

  • Hi,

Every time I disconnect the autopilot my 787 banks hard to the right. The second I press ap off I can see the yoke jumping to the right. Tried to calibrate before disconnecting, but that doesn’t have any effect . Anybody experiencing the same? Any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Were you in a different posture before you turned on the autopilot? If you were lying down before and standing afterwards, the device’s neutral holding position will have changed.

Another discrepancy is that when on autopilot any menu visits will prompt (an almost unnoticed) fresh holding/posture recalibration which can be so casual on autopilot flight that only the autopilot being engaged keeps the plane under control. With a casual calibration the plane will have a strong control input when the autopilot is disengaged.

Have you tried any app that indicates your device’s gyro outputs? An electronic compass, spirit level or technical instrumentation app might indicate if your device drifts off and needs calibration or a restart.

(Is it the 787 that has permanent auto trim which insidiously feeds in trim alterations without the pilot’s command inputs? That sort of ‘airbusness’ annoys me! I feel the same about the Aerofly _copilot_ and auto assistance selections).

  • If you use the virtual analog input instead of the tilt input does it happen as well?

No issue when in analog mode. I tried to reproduce it. It seems that the “problem” in tilt mode’ builts over time. I.e. the longer you fly the more the yoke acts funny to the right when you disconnect. If you start just a quick flight and position yourself on final, all wil be normal. When you are on a longer flight with a route and autopilot on then it start building up. So I guess it’s a trimm issue. The gyro of my iPad works fine. An I never had the problem with any of the other aircraf.,one way I managed to “save” my flight was to hold the device extremely turned right, when calibrating, so I was kind of neutral to hold when I disconnected the autopilot.

Gyro all fine ( no issues with any other aircraft or other game) no posture change after calibration
