Question about the A320

  • For Airbus descent modes look at this YouTube video especially from about time 4:00 onwards. The level symbol is on the left and the top of descent symbol is on the right.

  • The magenta dot is the planned deceleration point from descent speed down to 250kt below 10000ft (airspace speed limit).

The arrow with a horizontal tip indicates a level off. It's magenta if it's automatically managed, white if you need to take action.

The arrow with a downward pointing tip is the beginning of a descent. Magenta if it's automatically managed, white if you need to take action.

An arrow with an upward pointing tip would be the beginning of a climb.

Please also check the flight crew operating manual (FCOM) which describes these things in great detail. It's quite interesting if you want to learn about the aircraft just like real world pilots would during type rating.
