Thermals

  • Hi! I know it is a little cheating, but maybe it could help more people to get interested in gliding, speccially when we are in the learning stage.

Maybe it would be nice to add some mark in this area, as we can see where it is an airport, it could be displayed some icon or a T letter to display where a thermal is located. This could be optional in the menu, so we could select when to use it and when not. I hope you like the idea!

    Best regards, Juan

  • For example, on the Swiss Jura side, particularly in Chasseral, the thermal is quite nice! In the past, I've had a few real-world experiences with them in RC versions. The dynamics also have good lift depending on the climate. But I also sometimes broke a few!.:D

"For better or for worse" ;)

  • Gliders are just beautifully done in Aerofly! The lack of connection to the CU clouds is not ideal but it's a bit like flying in a blue day when you have to find the thermals blind.

I can imagine the developers torn between the two extremes of doing Airliners and Gliders, but it wouldn't take much to make Aerofly a perfect gliding sim.

  • I don't know if this video can stay. It's a bit long, more than 14 minutes. But it shows a ridge gliding from takeoff to landing at LHHH airport with an Rubik R-26 Góbé two-seater glider. The takeoff is done with a winch, and there is also a side-slip during landing. The conversation during the video is unfortunately in Hungarian. The instructor mainly warns the student about maintaining speed (75-80 km/h), the directions to follow, and the use of the aileron/rudder.

The flight in the video above can also be tried out in the simulator, even though the LHHH airport only exists on satellite imagery.
To do this, I first search for the airport in Google Earth.

After that, it is easy to find the airport in the simulator.

    Setting the wind.

And it works. That's what I like about this simulator. :)

  • The instructor said, "We're a little high, I'll slide it."
The airbrake was opened by the student, on the instructor's instructions. By the way, from the conversation it seemed that the "student" was a no longer active club member who went out to the airport to get a little nostalgic. :)
