Live weather when?

  • I would like to get live weather with the next upcoming plane since it would be so much more fun and I think most of the people would like this:)

The idea is good and has already been discussed several times here, but I don't think live weather would be necessary.

In my opinion, manual weather with climate change would already be a big improvement, as is the case today for wind and clouds, adding rain and snow.

But certainly, the complexity and time required for this development must be the same.

On the other hand, one of the most important factors that must also be taken into account, unlike other current SIM cards which are lacking at the moment, is to keep, if possible, the same performance rate.

And overall this is what makes Aerofly's current strength at the moment, despite STILL a few bugs to be fixed.

"For better or for worse" ;)

Well you can only talk for yourself of it not been necessary. I believe that a lot of us out there would welcome Live weather

  • Live weather would be great. Alternatively, you could also set the weather at your destination airport in advance. I hope you understand what I mean. Easier to create. You should be able to set the weather at the departure and destination airports separately in advance, just a thought 🤷

I'm not speaking for myself; check out MSFS, and you'll see that you have two options: either live weather or you can disable it and choose the manual option.

If you read my message correctly, I mentioned the potential development difficulty. No more, no less.

If you're convinced and assert that live weather is easier to develop than the other, or why not both, then let's go with that. I'm not a developer; this was just my feeling. Thanks!

Any option to add is interesting, but which one is easier to develop? I have no idea. If you confirm that live weather is simpler, then why not.
According to Jan (Jet-Pack), this doesn't seem to be the case.

  • This could be done in iterations:

    1. Start with the simple option to fetch the current (or historical) METAR for the origin or destination of your current flight plan. (The Wettergerät does that with a free internet API, but obviously for a simulator you will want to build your own, reliable API service.) This would not affect the performance in flight, as this would be still static weather.
    2. Next step could be to fetch origin and destination METAR before flight, and gradually blend between the two settings. (The Wettergerät DLL could do that by calculating the distance between both locations and your aircraft, and blending the values.) This would very much affect the performance, and as I remember the weather system of Aerofly is not meant to change its settings as long as simulation is running - so this could be the major point which would result in development cost.
    3. If your past blending the weather between two points, you can try to find a data source for world-wide live weather data. This API could be polled regularly to change the weather inside the simulator. This would obviously require a somewhat stable internet connection for all users to work.

So given these steps, from my perspective the idea of improving the handling of weather is not quite that simple as it appears at first glance, and may result in not only development cost, but also service cost.

  • Does old versions of AFS4 has some variable weather feature?

I suspect that the sim is build from the ground to have fixed weather, if this is the case it would be a huge effort to modify it for variable ever changing weather conditions.
