Trimming Suggestion

  • Trimming the aircraft is essential for flying especially when you hand fly the aircraft. As you may or may not know, currently I’m only flying the learjet and this is an aircraft type that needs to get manually trimmed for landing and take off. Especially while approaching it’s challenging to trim the aircraft because the trimmer is so far back and you can’t rlly look out of the window anymore. When you turn on the AP it will override your manual trim so there’s no other option than getting absolutely distracted to set the trim while manually hand flying.

I personally feel like we need a manual trim as a ui control option like the rudder or the throttle. This would allow us to trim the aircraft while focusing on the landing. Turning on automatic trim for an aircraft that doesn’t get automatically trimmed is no option for me, that’s unrealistic. What do you think guys about my suggestion? Would you also like to see a trim as a ui control? Maybe, you could activate that in settings so when you are flying airbus for example you can deactivate it again.

  • I had complained about the (mobile!) Learjet trim before and Jan told me that the trim goes on during the flap extensions of a landing process and stays on. To zero things in mobile the plane could be stopped on the runway and the secondary trim switch on the centre console activated and the trim manually wound back to the centre.

An alternative, which is the method I use is to permanently activate the secondary trim control and use multiple repeated deflections of the trim switch to adjust the trim as required. It does not seem to move if the switch is simply held up or down. This gives manual trim control which is quite unique in mobile, then again the sim putting trim on one way (only) is unique in mobile too. With the trim control in secondary mode the Learjet does not accumulate unwanted trim excesses.

The Learjet 45 has a configuration trim system. So as you retract or extend flaps or spoilers the pitch trim automatically adjusts to alleviate most of the pitch effects. This system is active as long as primary trim is selected in the pedestal. If you switch to the secondary backup trim system then this automatic configuration trim does not activate.

On top of that Aerofly FS has the pitch trim assistance which enables constant auto trim so that you can just fly without having to worry about pitch trim. This is enabled per default for good reason. I agree that manual pitch trim buttons would be quite helpful to improve realism for many airplanes which require manual trim. But the space on screen is very limited and we can't just add more and more controls.
