I think you need set FAC (final approaching cource)
You need to manually or with HDG mode autopilot in use, fly roughly towards the localiser beam stretching out from the extended runway centre line. You need to aim the plane as if it is going to fly through the beam so that the aircraft detects the localiser signal, it is typical to steer across the beam about 30 degrees off the localiser course.
When you pass inside 2 1/2 degrees from the centre line the localiser needle will become active and (ideally at about 1/2 scale deflection) pressing APR will engage the autopilot with the ILS.
You can fly it manually if you wish or you can initially press NAV on the autopilot and APR later when the glideslope needle moves down.
In the simulator you also need to adjust the ‘OBS’ course knob on the ILS/VOR gauge to the localiser heading, leaving it at N or 360 will not work with the autopilot.
Turning on the visual Approach Guides will make flying across the localiser beam easier.
