Thank you to the devs! (and a question about sound mods)

  • Well, it goes without saying, Christmas came a little early for us simmers. A HUGE thank you for the hard work, I'm looking forward to doing a longhaul from Doha to Heathrow over Christmas.

Not in any rush for a reply, just wondering what happens to any sound mods I've created for the A350 (touchdown sounds etc) I've backed everything up, will these be overwritten when I install the updates via steam? I can manually copy the sound files back, and edit the system.tmd again, but I am curious if there is a way to keep the sound mods whenever an update comes along?

Anyway, enjoy your rest over the holidays!

FYI - The changes I made - Touch down sounds, ground roll, cabin shake, wind sound, and engine spool sounds

  • You don't need to overwrite anything in the Steam folders (nor should you). Sound mods and additional repaints should exist inside the user folder using the aircraft options. To my knowledge this can be used to mute the existing sounds, to replace existing sounds (by changing file name in the tmd) or adjust volume levels/pitch of existing sounds. Additional sounds can also fully exist in the user folder without any need to change the default aircraft.

Back to the question: Steam should automatically download the latest files and delete any manual adjustments if the file date is older. But it may also fail to download these files making the A350 unusable for you, which is why you should not mess with files in the Steam library... Then you'll have to delete the a350 folder first and then check file integrity.

  • I'll have to look into this a bit deeper, when I have some time. Everything's working fine, no issues. The reason it likely works for me is because the files dates are 'not older', I am simply converting wav files (recorded from the real aircraft and CAE sim using professional mics), renaming them, then replacing the current ground roll sounds etc. Same thing with adjustments to the system.tmd file. Took me a few minutes to re-add my changes, and the aircraft now sounds like it did before this update.

I work in IT (over 25 years), and this is exactly why I don't want to release these sound mods to the general public, as something probably would break! I'll look into using the correct method as you describe.

On a side note (nothing to do with the changes I made) the A350 Cabin in VR looks amazing, but you will likely get complaints online from VR users due to the camera angle in the seats. It defaults to looking out the window, when it should default to looking forward (as you would in real life) I hope that makes sense (you wouldn't sit sideways in your seat as a passenger) not a huge deal for me, as 99.9% I am on the flight deck

Thanks again for a great update!

EDit - I also noticed realistic INS align times have a \\ in front of them, and shorter align times are used instead. I changed it back to realistic with no issues. I assume it was changed to faster times for mobile users in a rush

  • Instead of making the changes to the system.tmd file itself add a new parameters.tmd file in your user documents folder and any additions to the a350 system.tmd file just go into a new systems.tmd file.

So in your user folder add a new folder a350_1000 with the subfolder for your sound-mod, e.g.
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\Aerofly FS 4\aircraft\a350_1000\soundmod\

Add an options.tmc in that folder with the parameter "Type" set to "default" (similar to the a320/engine_cfm folder). Description name for the option can be something like "Sound-Mod". (This name is not shown, only when the option is a repaint)

The parameters.tmd is applied after the base aircraft is loaded and can override existing parameters in the default aircraft.

The system.tmd adds new things, as if you extended the original default aircraft system.tmd file by your contents.

If you dig through our aircraft files you'll find that we use these options extensively, e.g. to modify the base A320 to become an A321 for example, even going as far as changing engine thrust, wing geometry, flaps and so on
