Request to Add NZIR (McMurdo Ice Runway) to Aerofly FS Global

  • Hello IPACS team,

I would like to request the addition of NZIR (McMurdo Ice Runway) to Aerofly FS Global. NZIR is a seasonal ice runway located in Antarctica, serving McMurdo Station, and it holds a unique and significant place in aviation history.

Unlike standard asphalt or concrete runways, NZIR was built on frozen sea ice and specifically used for ice runway operations. This makes it an exceptional candidate for flight simulation, offering rarely represented extreme operating conditions, such as very low temperatures, special performance considerations, and non-standard landing techniques. NZIR played a critical role in Antarctic operations, particularly for military and heavy transport aircraft (such as the C-130 and similar types). Considering Aerofly FS Global’s strong flight physics and performance modeling, an ice runway like NZIR would add unique depth to the simulation, including:

Ice-specific braking and surface behavior Aircraft performance in extreme cold weather Operational planning in remote and isolated environmentsIn addition, Antarctica is a region that is almost entirely absent from most flight simulators. Adding NZIR would provide Aerofly FS Global with a niche and advanced feature that clearly differentiates it from other mobile and PC simulators. It would appeal not only to casual users, but also to experienced simulation enthusiasts looking for unique and challenging scenarios. For these reasons, I believe that adding NZIR (McMurdo Ice Runway) to Aerofly FS Global would be a valuable contribution in terms of realism, originality, and overall content diversity.Thank you for your consideration.

  • Currently the simulator treats all surfaces as hard surface with high friction. This means ice is not slippery yet and until that changes I don't think it would be advisable to add that ice runway, because pilots would expect it to be slippery.

But that doesn't mean it will never be added, right?
