Wobbling image in VR

  • I had this issue with a wobbling image some time back with OpenGL so I moved to Vulkan and it did not happen there. However it is back now also in Vulkan since the last update. It only happens in VR, not visible on flat screen. It happens on cockpit screens (A320) and when being close to buildings like hangers (eg. Sion). I made a short video through the lenses of my Pimax Crystal. Unfortunately I cannot upload it here. If there is an IPACS email I can send it to I will. Thanks.

    Specs are in my signature.

  • I tested a lot off different settings. The outcome is that 'Shadow' and 'Building density' have most influence on the wobbling (jumping up and down of textures). I think building density has even more impact. However even if both are set to low the wobbling does not fully disapear. If building density is set to low and shadow to insane the image (hangar doors) right in front of me is stable and only left and right parts of the image are wobbling. The screens in the cockpit are steadily wobbing, just the screens, nothing else in the cockpit.

  • Is there any configuration software for the headset? Some headsets render the center part of the screen different and may also use frame interpolation and other tricks. It sounds to me like some other software is interfering here and is trying to change the image at the center of the screen but perhaps that creates unnecessary lag causing the wobble.

Can you check if there are any parameters that you can adjust in the headset manufacturer's software?

  • That would explain that it is only visible in the headset but not on the screen which runs an image in parallel. It is a Pimax Crystal with Pimax Play and steam vr. The difference to eg. MSFS is that steam vr is involved. I cannot run the Pimax on Aerofly just with Pimax Play. I will check if it has to do with eye tracking an foveated rendering. Thanks for your help!

  • I think I found the problem. It is a Pimax Play option called 'smart smoothing' and it does frame interpolation to improve the refresh rate.

Thank you, Jan, for guiding me in the right direction.
