Leaving gear down after take off also accelerates brake cooling.
As a side note, your brake temp limit decreases if you take off with brake fans ON, this is because the fans cool the sensors faster than cooling the actual brakes, so the real temperature is much hotter than the cockpit readings
ON max temp 150c
OFF max temp 300c
in the above pic you should delay take off

i only ever got brake hot warnings after making landings with no engines (obviously landing much faster than ideal), does this work the same if you apply max autobrake and max reverse on a normal landing?

Max autobrake is not selectable for landing but if you use max manual braking then the brakes do get hot, yes. Also after a rejected takeoff...
