Taxiway Signs for some Airports

  • Just wanted to share with the community some Taxiway signs i'm currently creating for some airports i fly regularly.

Thanks to user max3max that created a fantastic script to export signs from X-plane database. All i had to do is manually tweak the height of each individual sign (time consuming, but doable) and compiling.

    Enjoy, cheers

    Airports so far:
    LEIB
    LEMH
    LFML
    ELLX
    LFKB
    LIPX
    LOWI
    LOWS
    LEAL

    14/05/26: Added LIMC, LFQQ, LIRP
    17/05/26: Added LEPA, LFST, LIEE

Changed the title of the thread from “Taxiways for some Airports” to “Taxiway Signs for some Airports”.
  • Thanks. How time consuming? A rough estimate for each sign. I wouldn't mind trying this for the large international airports

If everything is preped (files, folders, powershell scripts for moving more than 100 bulk files from folders, and a map of all the signs)
you can manage 2 hours for 50 signs. (for reference LOWS was 65 signs, LFML was 150 signs, LEIB little more than 100 signs).
The problem is I need to get out and in of FS4 to check if the tweaks were correct, since i'm eyeballing.
Also some signs are several meters underground, so you need to know they should be there, and exaggerate height in order for them to pop out of ground, and then eyeballing how much down to correct.
It's actually sad autoheight doesn't work correctly, or it would be a matter of 2 or 3 minutes per airport.
An airport like LEMD or LEBL or LFPG could take more than a day.
That's why i'm only making the airports i fly regularly, and share them as i do them.

  • ... It's actually sad autoheight doesn't work correctly, ...

Autoheight itself works correctly - but always refers to the height of the 1 coordinate of the airport. If the elevation of the airport is absolutely flat, autoheight also fits. It would be better for all kinds of elements if autoheight would always refer to the elevation of the coordinate of the element, which in my opinion would require a lot more computing power.

I can imagine a combination model:

    • if an aircraft is on the ground, the reference height for autoheigt is the elevation at the locations of the element.
    • If an aircraft is in the air, the airfield elevation is sufficient as a reference height for autoheight.

Regardless of this, I find every taxi sign and every groundtext already today as an invigorating element on an airport - no matter what size. Therefore, I am also happy about everyone who contributes to this.

  • Unfortunately, I don't know of a shortkey for a quick restart of scenery, as it is with airplanes.

To ensure that the restart of scenarios is as fast as possible, i often deactivates images during the work phase.

  • Thank you for your efforts and patience in implementing these taxiway signs.

It would be good to see how this performs on the LSZH and LSGG sides, but especially on LSGG, as the terrain appears to be quite uneven. Tests have been carried out in the past, but the results were not entirely conclusive.

Some time ago, max3max already created the taxisigns for LSGG when he created the script. you can find his original post in the forum. I've attached his LSGG signs on this thread.
as per LSZH i will eventually do that airport since it's one of my regulars.

Every airport i do, i'll update and attach to this thread on the original post.

Yes, I know, that's why I was partly referring to LSGG, and chrispriv also mentioned and detailed it in @max3max's thread, with a suitable terrain correction.

Nevertheless, despite this, some signs in LSGG remain above ground.

ahhhh... i didn't know some signs were still above ground at LSGG.
    i'll try to correct them.
My problem with @chrispriv solution is the leveling of the area... i really enjoy the more realistic uneven terrain, though his solution really turns this process way faster and makes the autoheight work pretty good.

  • Some people are really putting in a lot of effort to improve this simulator. However, I wish the IPACS developers would take care of it. So that all players benefit. It's all very regrettable.

I think that I can write about myself, that I belong to the mentioned group "some people" with my different activities. And therefore in the many years I may have also got a slightly better insight at one point or another.

Based on this knowledge, I now write that IPACS cares much more about the points we mention than is often discussed here.

Please do me a favor in this thread: please refrain from the well-known and sufficiently detailed negative discussions here, because these are well known at IPACS.

Let us be patient with the topics of taxi signs and ground text, among other things, as some others have already written. Thank you.
