Aerofly FS 4 Easy Weather Injector

  • Aerofly FS 4 Easy Weather Injector- BETA

I'm excited to release my Aerofly FS 4 Easy Weather Injector to the community!

The goal of this tool is simple: make realistic weather setup in Aerofly FS 4 much easier.

Instead of manually trying to recreate real-world conditions, the app can retrieve live METAR information and convert it into Aerofly-compatible weather settings.

The project is still in BETA so is still in production and not all functions will be available or work as they should.

IMPORTANT: THE SIMULATOR MUST BE RESTARTED BEFORE CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL BE APPLIED.

The live feature is still in development and will not work as the simulator must be restarted to read and write values.

    What it currently does

    The current release includes:

    • Live METAR weather
    • Wind speed and direction
    • Cloud conditions
    • Visibility
    • Time / UTC weather information
    • Automatic weather updating
    • Easy-to-use controls for adjusting the weather

The idea is that you select an airport, retrieve its current weather and let the application handle the conversion into Aerofly's main.mcf file within your Aerofly FS4 folder.

Download the ZIP, extract it and launch the application.

This is currently a macOS release. If there is enough interest, support for additional platforms could potentially be considered in the future.

    Possible future updates — V2

There are already some much bigger ideas for where this project could go.

Rather than remaining purely a weather tool, a future V2 could potentially become an Aerofly flight preparation and planning application.

The idea would be to have an interface where you could set up an entire flight before launching Aerofly.

    For example:

    • Departure airport
    • Parking stand / gate
    • Live or custom weather
    • Date and time
    • Fuel and aircraft setup
    • Destination airport
    • Route / flight plan

The ultimate goal would be something similar in concept to the flight setup experience found in other flight simulators:

Choose your flight → prepare the aircraft and environment → launch Aerofly → start flying.

Ideally, the simulator could automatically start with the airport, starting position, weather and other settings already configured.

However, these features are future possibilities rather than confirmed features. Automatically changing the aircraft's location, parking stand, fuel, payload and especially entering routes will depend on what Aerofly FS 4 exposes through its configuration files, SDK and external interfaces.

The current release is therefore focused on getting the weather system working reliably first.

If the available Aerofly interfaces allow it, V2 could potentially turn this project into something much bigger than a weather injector.

    Feedback & suggestions

I'm fairly new to these types of productions so updates will take time and patience would be appreciated.

If you try the application, please let me know how it works for you!

Bug reports, suggestions and ideas for future features are very welcome.

Thanks for checking out the project and happy flying!

  • Wow, this is a fantastic initiative with great potential, glad you are developing it for MacOS, as that is often the forgotten platform.

Have you perhaps thought of connecting or collaborating with other Devs here? Armitage Frank has developed several tools for AeroFly, the latest one being the AeroFly Startgerät in its current version 2.2.2. Maybe you can get in touch with him and make a single massive tool for multiple platforms, such as MacOS, Linux and Windows?

Please keep us informed of new features and future project changes, i’ll be definitely testing your app soon and leaving you my feedback behind, as i did with Frank’s Startgerät here.

  • Hi Aerofoil2011,

I have been testing your AeroFly Live Weather Injector app and wanted to share my detailed findings and feedback with you. Overall, you have built a very lightweight tool with great potential, though there are currently some limitations and areas that could use some clarification.

Below is my structured feedback broken down into positive aspects, suggestions for improvement, and a few questions.

    🟢 Positive Points

    • Clean User Interface: Your UI looks clean and well-organized. Even though it displays a lot of information, everything has its dedicated space and feels intuitive.
    • Smart Backup System: The app beautifully detects the main main.mcf file directory. Providing both manual and automatic backups during the weather injection process—and appending the backup date to the file name—is an excellent safety feature for the user.
    • User-Friendly Controls: The buttons to backup main.mcf, restore it, and apply the desired weather (both loaded automated METAR and manual weather) are very straightforward and easy to use.
    • Eyesight Friendly: The native dark mode is a great choice. It makes the app much more pleasant to read and reduces eye strain during long flight sessions.
    • Clear Section Design: Each section of the application has clear and concise functions. The weather manipulation controls are smooth and responsive.
    • Performance: The app is extremely lightweight. It consumes almost no CPU resources and runs very smoothly.

🔴 Areas for Improvement & Questions

    User Experience & UI Design

    • Icon and Error Branding: The application icon and error messages feel a bit generic ("pure Python"). It would look much more professional if you could implement a custom icon dedicated to weather or aviation.
    • Readability Issues: While the window size is comfortable, the typography and explanations are a bit too small. Specifically, the Change Log text is almost impossible to read without a magnifying glass, which makes regular use a bit uncomfortable.
    • Unlabeled Elements: The UTC Time feature is a bit confusing because the two buttons to the right of this function currently have no text labels.

    • Unclear Error Logs: When searching for certain airport METARs, random Python errors pop up. These can be difficult for the average user to understand and interpret. I assume this occurs because the value of the visibility slider goes above the limit that the app has: 16.000 meters visibility IRL vs 10.000 meters maximum visiblity of the app, which understands 10km or more is just good visibility and has no need to further expand it.

    The "Live Weather" Ambiguity

I noticed a bit of a contradiction regarding the "Live" functionality. In your presentation, you mentioned that "The live feature is still in development and will not work as the simulator must be restarted to read and write values." However, a "Live Weather" toggle is actively present in the app, which raises a few questions:

    • How does it inject? Does it inject weather every X minutes? Or does it only refresh when the simulator is closed? If it only works before opening the sim, it wouldn't technically be "Live Weather" but rather a one-time METAR injection.
    • Simultaneous File Use: During my testing, when the Live Weather countdown hits 10 minutes, the change log updates. How does the app inject data if the simulator and the master main.mcf file are already actively locked and in use during a flight?
    • Usage Guidelines: Do we need to keep the app open in the background during the flight? Can it be safely minimized? I constantly keep getting these reminders, after which the weather is not injected nor does it apply like the METAR suggests.

    • Feature Alignment Suggestion: You mentioned considering features like gate placement and route injection for a future v2.0. I highly suggest finalizing and aligning the core weather functionality first. If simulator limitations prevent true mid-flight injection, it might be better to remove the "Live" nomenclature. Otherwise, users will arrive at their destination with their departure airport's weather, making real-life METAR reports useless for arrivals (as winds, visibility, clouds, and turbulence won't match reality).

    Functionality Clarifications

    • The "Refresh from AeroFly" Button: Could you clarify what this button actually does? What happens when pressed, and does it relate to the auto-update countdown?
    • High-Altitude Winds: Does the app support or inject high-altitude cruise winds? For example, on a transatlantic flight (e.g., EGLL to KJFK), will the Primary Flight Display (PFD) reflect accurate cruise winds? Can the application interpolate wind data between various high-altitude METAR stations to create a realistic cruise environment?

    Final Verdict

You have a very promising and lightweight tool here with a solid foundation. If you can fix the text scaling, clarify the "Live" functionality, clean up the Python error strings + the App icon, and perhaps add a pdf instruction manual of all the features and functionalities of this app, this will easily become an essential utility for the AeroFly community.

Thank you for your hard work on this!

I especially like the backup idea.

Which API are you using for METAR information?

  • First of all thank-you so much for your feedback and I am so thankful that this project has been noticed!

AeRodri Thanks so much for taking the time to test the app so thoroughly! This is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for.

You're right about the "Live Weather" terminology. The current implementation is more accurately described as automatic METAR refreshing/injection, rather than true in-flight live weather. So I will try to change it to advertise more of an "Easy Weather Injector" instead of a "Live Injector" for now. Aerofly needs to be restarted to reliably read the changed main.mcf values, so I don't want to give users the wrong impression.

I'll definitely look at clarifying this in the UI and documentation, and potentially changing the terminology in v1.0.0 of the app (which will be on my Github ASAP) I could also implement a tutorial PDF, Video or even add a tutorial section in the app.

The other points you've raised are really useful too — especially the small text/change log, generic icon, unlabeled UTC controls and the Python errors. I'll go through these with the developer/build system and see what can be improved.

The high-altitude wind point is particularly interesting. The current system is based around METAR information, so I wouldn't claim that it currently provides accurate cruise-level wind profiles. That's something that would need a completely different data source/approach rather than simply using airport METARs.

And I completely agree that the core weather functionality should be solid before moving too far into things like gates, fuel and route injection for V2.

In response to THYAGOSANTOS queries, for now I think this will be a Mac only project, as I am on Mac and it would mean a complete overhaul of the app which I am not completely prepared for and would cause significant difficulties, although if there were a creator that is on a Windows platform and is prepared to translate my findings to a Windows desktop then I would be happy to share my experience and help if needed.

Armitage That seems like such a great project and it seems like great minds think alike 😂 this project seems so similar to mine and I would be happy to collaborate on different versions, sharing my ideas and experiences and working on a proper live weather function. I am using the NOAA Aviation Weather Center (AWC) for METAR data.

Actually I could not get live weather inside of Aerofly FS4. I concluded that main.mcf only sets the weather at the beginning of a flight, while the DLL cannot change the weather settings like clouds while the sim is running. I finally gave up on that idea, believing the static weather to be a inherent restriction.

Otherwise I would like to share how I convert between Aerofly's normalised weather values and real live weather values. My findings are in this document:
