Basel and the DME in "1" (android FS)

  • Basel and the DME.
The Baron DME reads above 100 miles but only displays two whole numbers so above 100 it displays from 00 upwards. The Basel 33 threshold shows DME 94 but the final approach fix shows 02 being 102 miles from the RLP VOR/DME in France.

The fix is found at 034 degrees and 16.6 miles from Grenchen. The nav 1 will display 109.35 when active (flying outbound from Basel will wake it up) and the approach is from 5,700 feet for 12.6 miles on a track of 334 degrees. The glide slope is slightly steep at 3.5 degrees so the rate of descent needs to be 6.2 times the ground speed. It is supposed to be 882 feet at the threshold but the texture is coarse and bumpy.

Basel is interesting as it has NDBs at each end and the DME gives some limited information (because it is located about 40 degrees off the inbound heading so every mile indicated will be about 1.4 miles flown on the approach heading).
