Virtual Reality

Welcome to the future of flight simulation. Virtual reality (VR) allows for users with the appropriate headsets to enter a world so real that you can almost feel the environment around you. Aerofly FS 2 in VR places you directly into the pilot seat of aircraft that you only dreamed of flying in the real world. Look around the cockpit and you could swear that it's real. The performance and realism that you will see with Aerofly FS 2 in VR far surpasses anything out there to date.

VR Specific Settings

When running Aerofly FS 2 in a VR Mode you will notice that an additional category is available to you under settings. These VR specific settings provide you with options to further improve your VR experience.

Within the Virtual Reality menu you will find the following settings. See the descriptions below to learn what each setting does.

Scale Factor

Scale factor allows for you to increase or decrease the the scale of your view while in VR. Note - Keeping this setting at the default “0.00” provides you with the most realistic VR experience.

Render Scale Factor

This setting will increase your overall image quality. The higher to 2.00 (max) you go, the better the quality. Note - Adjusting this setting higher than 1.00 can greatly affect your performance. If your GPU (Graphics Card) can handle it, you will be rewarded with crisp, clear graphics in VR. Setting this to 2.00 should only be for those with GTX 10xx Graphics Cards.

Lens Flare Effect

Setting this feature to “ON” will enable lens flare effect.

Transparency of your virtual hands

Use this setting to adjust how transparent you want your virtual hands.

Show Native View on Main Monitor

This setting will toggle the window on your main (2D) monitor to show split screen or one single screen while in VR. The default setting for this is NO. For normal play keep this setting to NO as setting to YES may cause performance problems. Setting to YES should only be used for capturing videos or photos of your screen while in VR.

Using Motion Controllers

The future of Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulator control has arrived. Featuring your virtual hands! Advanced VR motion controllers now give you the freedom and ability to fully control your flightdeck operation. Read this section to learn how to use your hands in Aerofly FS 2. Feel the excitement in a way never experienced before.

Both the Oculus Touch and HTC Vive controllers provide you with a total flying experience. With the motion controllers connected and turned on prior to running Aerofly FS 2 you can fully operate your aircraft using just those controllers. You can also use one motion controller in combination with any other controller that you wish for virtually any combination of control.

Positioning

To obtain the best experience possible when using the Touch Controllers we recommend that you position yourself away from any objects that can obstruct the view between the Oculus sensors and your hands.

When operating an aircraft from the pilot seat you will need access to all buttons, controls, and functions, some of which are located near the floor. It is recommended to sit away from your desk and to make sure that you are clear of any obstacles on both sides of you.

Introducing your 'virtual' hands

When you first strap on your VR Headset, power up your motion controllers, and boot Aerofly FS 2 up you will first see the menu screen as you are accustomed to, so what's different?

The first thing that you will notice are your virtual hands. These hands, which are made fully with the innovative programming of IPACS to allow for universal use, are more or less an extension of your own hands; the motions that are made with your real hands are mimicked onto your virtual hands in real time.

Controlling the Menus

So how do I use my motion controllers to navigate the menu system? Let's get started…

You will notice that the menu is now closer to you, close enough to touch actually. To use the menu with your new VR Hands the menu will now react like a tablet.

Select and Execute a menu item - With your finger touch the menu item that you wish to select. You will 'feel' the touch as you select your menu option.

Swipe - Using your hand or finger swiping across the screen you can cycle through items such as selecting your aircraft.

Note - You could navigate all menu screens by following this simple approach.

Location and Navigation Map Control

The location and navigation screens use some special gesture controls that makes is easier to navigate the maps.

Drag the Map - Use the point gesture to touch and drag the map in the direction that you wish to move it.

Zoom In and Out - To zoom the map in and out simply hold one hand on the map while moving the other left of right to zoom in and out.

Direction Compass - You can adjust the direction that your aircraft is headed by touching on the intersection of the compass line and the compass circle with your finger. Move your finger in the direction around the circle and you will see the line moving with your motion.

Gesture Controls

The use of gestures in Aerofly FS 2 simulate the natural motions of your real hands. Use these below gestures to control all functions of your aircraft.

Note All gestures used in Aerofly FS 2 are the same for all motion controllers, however, the button locations on your Vive and Touch controllers to simulate the gesture controls are in different locations.

All currently available controls in Aerofly FS 2 can be manipulated by using gestures. Use the below chart to learn the available gestures.

Control Gesture
Single Lever Pinch Slide
Two Levers Grab Slide
Yoke/Stick Grab Move
Toggle Switches Point/Flick
Rocker Switches Point Push
Dials Pinch Turn
Buttons Point Push

Turning Dials - When turning dials your natural motion would be to pinch the dial and turn your wrist. This is the same in Aerofly. While resting your thumb on the resting place use your index finger to pull the trigger, this motion will resemble a pinch, then turn your wrist in the direction that you want to turn the dial.

Pushing Buttons - Pushing buttons is as simple as pointing your finger, the sensors of your motion controller will see that your finger is pointed and duplicate it in your virtual cockpit. When pushing buttons reach in to the button that you want to activate and you will actually feel the button you are pushing.

Grabbing Controls - Grabbing is the natural way for controlling your yoke or joystick. To grab you basically make a fist by pulling the trigger with your index finger and button with your middle finger and your thumb in its resting place. With the grab fully held you can fully control the yoke or stick the way that you would in real life. You can also use both hands if you choose. Once you open your hands you will let go of the yoke.

With the grab gesture you can also grab two throttle levers at once. Simply grab in the middle of the two throttles and with natural motion slide the levers forward or back. Note - If you want to move only one throttle lever use the pinch gesture.

Note - Do your arms need a rest? No problem, see the Physical Controls section to learn how to fly using the analog sticks on your Touch controllers.

Flicking Switches - Flicking switches uses the same point gesture as pushing buttons. To flick a switch simply point your finger on the switch and move it to the direction you want the switch to go in a quick steady motion.

Physical Controls

To use your motion controllers as the only controllers in Aerofly FS 2 we have taken advantage of the additional analog functionality of controllers. Some of the analog controls are necessary if you plan on using the motion controllers as your sole input, and some provide the user with options.
