What do you mean by "they were active"? The green light does not mean this. In all new Boeing aircraft, means wich can be deselected or not by the pilots. A tipicall example is when the aircraft is in wing level mode after take off and not in hdg mode. When you press the TOGA button, the green light of LNAV goes off and can no longer be disarmed, but on the FMA remains hardcoded in the autopilote mode.
I understand that this is a misunderstanding for those that does not know very well how the Boeing aircraft system works.
So you must explain better , what you mean by that.
They were indicated on the PFD but did not follow anything that was filled in the Flight Plan.
