The million dollar question is when is "sometimes". If you find out when this happens we can track down the problem. Otherwise we don't have any clue what could be going wrong on your particular system.
What hardware are you using? (PC specs, mouse,...)
Do you have the latest drivers installed?
Do you use windowed mode or full screen, how many monitors?
Do you use any font scaling or other zoom methods in windows (e.g. for bad eye sight)?

Hardawre is the latest GE force 1070 ti 8 gb windows 10 running steam 3 terrabyte solid state plus another 3 terrabyte backup hdd, stryx graphics card, intel i7 processor , 1 monitor no scaling .

This does not answer the questions that Jan asked, and it makes it almost impossible to troubleshoot your problem.

have made some changes with steam , think problem may be there.

Yes that's NOT supposed to happen Check your controller bindings

Trying lots of things but running Vulkan seems to fix it ? any ideas why ?

yes definitely using Vulkan fixed issue . worked well on all aircraft without a hitch . tried swapping back and problem reoccurred, back to Vulcan and it went away again.
