Let's make an Aircraft

  • For what it is worth. This is not a complete list but should give you an idea of the wide spread use of the airfoil.

I got my SES seaplane rating in a J-3 cub on floats and my multi-engine in a Piper Aztec - both have the same wing design. Interesting.

  • just some numbers for comparison.. They are indeed different=O

Very different performance. The cub takes off like a very lightweight airplane, the CC takes off like an elevator.;)

  • Here is a good flight review of the Carbon Cub (2010). It even tells you how the company name was derived! Got to pay attention to the details of the online articles - there are several different models and most of the homebuilts have slight modifications based on a friends advice.

You and download and save the pdf at the end of the article.

I think the CC just has a slightly different wing tip, thus shorter wing span and less wing area. And of course its lighter and has a different engine, ergo all different weights, speeds and power values. The big question is: is the root length still the same and have they just chopped of a few inches from either wing tip? Thats what I guess is going on, so chord is not longer but wing span shorter, so if you take the same wing span and scale up the cc it looks like it has a "deeper" wing.

  • Hey Gang,

Here is 1,200 hours of work building a Carbon Cub reduced down to an 8 minute video. Cool

    Jan and Jay,

I have sent this question to Carbon Cub for an official answer from the designers.

  • I realize the engine specs may be one of the last things done, but the CC uses a very special method of obtaining the 180 hp. As a flight sim model, some of the restrictive SLSA specs will not apply. A simple O_200 or derated O-360 might be a lot simpler.

  • I don't think they only "chopped" the wing tips by few inches. They have quite different shape as well as the horizontal stabilizer. Also the height of the two planes differ by 0.8 meters (although this could be due to bigger prop and tires).

Anyway I would like to get this right the first time though so we'll have to wait for the response from CubCrafters.

    Jay,

Are you interested in all the dimensions of the Carbon Cub SS or specifically the comparison to the original J-3 cub? The startup of Carbon Cub was to replace the Super Cub - the PA-18, not the original J-3, with a lighter, simpler, and better performing aircraft.

I will see if I can get all the major dimension from Club Crafters.

    Regards.

  • The CC wingtips are made of carbon fiber so the design was set very early.

Here are the general specs. Height varies 3 inches or so depending on tires. Some of the tundra models have the landing gear moved forward when adding the really large tires to help with aggressive braking and avoiding tip overs.

hm, the pa-18 super cub has other values too. I don't think those are very reliable. With an aspect ratio of 7:1 on the super cub with 10.73m wing span and an aspect ratio of 5.2 to 1 on the carbon cub ss with 10.44m (roughly the same span) the wing area of the super cub should be quite a bit less than that of a carbon cub. I'd only take figures from cubcrafters at this point, maybe they have a three view plan for us, that would be perfect for our needs. Maybe they want in on this and let us ride along or maybe they ground the project, who knows. I think its good advertisement for them if they let us built this and support us on our way.

If we can't get any infos we'll just build a super cub instead, right? And maybe put on that cowling which would be close enough. It should still be fun to fly :)

could you please attach the source link? is that the SS or FX or EX or X Cub? (its http://cubcrafters.com/carboncub/ss isn't it? )

gotta be careful as they all have different weights and some have different ailerons, other cockpits (prop lever)

  • All models have the factory designed and furnished wing tips. Anything else is an untested, unapproved mod by an experimental builder.

I think I good path would be to settle on the FX model for the flight sim. I will try to get the Company to verify that the frame and such is "exactly identical" to the SS model. The advantage is that is does not have to comply with the LSA specs for gross weight and a few other specs. Other advantages are the options for bush landing gear, CS prop, fuel injection, slotted flaps, and more as possible future mods, even floats one day.

The "Factory assisted build of the FX" would be my recommendation and I will try to get the Company to sponsor the design info so we can actually call it a Carbon Cub in the flight sim.

  • Not to muddy the water, but take a look at the new FX3 with Constant Speed Prop and slightly larger engine. The low end is almost unchanged but the cruise speed is outstanding.

  • In my email to CubCrafters, I politely asked them for support in form of some drawings with dimensions. I agree it's the only way forward at this point.

Maybe if others joined the cause and wrote them few kind words too...?

I did. I sent mine to specific individuals at CC.

    Here is what we need.
