Oh no! Too slow! I saw the revised download was available and was looking forward to attempting a landing on the carrier - even with the odd mystery pothole. I'm back at the PC but Rodeo's link is gone again for more tweaking. Maybe you could share again... with big caveats?

Well, it took several approaches but I was finally able to get the Corsair onboard and stopped without tilting over on the nose. Those brakes are really touchy, especially when you are headed for the drink.

I need a big gorilla to jump on the back as soon as I touch down to counter that heavy engine and prop sticking out front. I sure like the deep throaty sounds of that 18-cylinder R-2800 Double Wasp engine but it needs work to sync the sounds with the throttle changes.

The maximum Aerofly wind speed needs to be increased. The ship would launch and recover at about 30 knots into the wind which could easily result in 50 to 60 knots over the deck. This would make a Corsair approach much more manageable.
Winds are stronger over the sea, the significant friction from ground obstacles and hills or mountains is missing. -

Look what you started - now beautiful objects can really be added. Thanks again for getting us going! This is the USS Nimitz by Javier Fernandez.
There are some real problems with this model in that quite a few objects are mistextured, invisible from certain angles (wrong sided polygons), and objects like the catapults and arresting wires sticking up which catches our landing gear. But they are nicely detailed. The FSX models are available from several sources:

Make sure you always check to see that the author is OK with letting you use them and clearly for noncommercial uses. I use Model Converter X from fsdeveloper.com to convert from MDL to AC formats and DXTBMP to convert from DDS to BMP -

I'm still not happy with the carrier model I used. But I found out VERY interesting things:
You can add an airport (or carrier) to the location map as well as define start- and parkpositions.
Great possibilities for scenery designers. -

One simple issue - we still have to rotate the model itself for the correct heading - correct?And, I have found that there might be problems with AC3D or the IPACS TGI plugin - some of the objects on the carrier get translated (typically vertically a few feet) and the textures that are mentioned in the AC file don't always get used - not sure about this - but wondered if you were having similar issues.

in the moment we have to rotate the 3D object. But IPACS told me they will include rotation angle in the TCS file.
So we can duplicate objects and rotate them to different angles.Textures have to be squares and size in the common steps 128-256-512-....

Adding a working runway sounds really exciting to me. 800 feet is a little on the short side though. Could that be a 4,000 or 5,000 foot long runway? How about the location - could it be located outside any of the existing DLC areas? How about overlaying one of the missing airports in the existing DLC areas?

800 feet is the length of the carrier deck (243m). I did not use the extreme outer edges so it could be slightly longer.
To add a runway we need an object to import, eventually just a rectangle, define the edges in the tcs, define start or park positions as well as the direction of the plane nose. I will publish the tcs content soon.
I'm rather sure we can add this where ever we want to. But this has to be tested yet.Best Regards

Reading earlier that IPACS plan to add a rotate parameter, is it feasible that non modellers could download a generic runway, easily determine some geo co-ordinates, modify runway length and orientation and incorporate it, using only notepad++ ?

yes, it's my intention to create such an universal runway.
However the visual geometry of the runway can only be changed with a graphics program like AC3D.
Phil, Ray or anybody else, do you have suggestions for a runway in aerofly FS 2?Another part for further investigation is the lighting system for a runway.

RodeoI would think if the runway is intended for general wide use, it could be just about any heading but to make it useful for the jet planes it probably should be 150 x 5,000 feet or something close to that. Otherwise, maybe 3,500 feet x 100 feet for the Cessna and other general aviation planes.
Maybe later on we can come up with an X or T arrangement that will have both runways available for maximum flexibility. I keep thinking it would be nice to be able to overlay some of the 'missing airports'. There are dozen of classic airports that were bypassed but, yet you can still see the full airport layout even read the runway numbers, complete with the taxiways and even some static aircraft.
I understand that the developers have to draw the line someplace and can't include all of them, but if we could activate some of the classics, it would be a big improvement.
I also keep thinking how nice it would be to have just one or two airports in the Pacific Northwest area. The resolution seems to be a lot better up the Pacific coast when compared to the center of the USA or Canada. There are so many great ones in this area that you could throw a dart to make a selection.
I think this could really open up some exciting locations while the DLCs are being developed.

Yes, I can land on it with the DR400 for sure and then taxi around on the deck. There are a few things you can still run into though including the crew. Just use full flaps, just above stall speed, and get ready to hit your brakes! I know it isn't quite practical but you can use pretty much the full length of the ship as well - stay towards the center.Dave
