A need for some “throw down” 3D graphics

  • With most of us getting somewhat comfortable with FSET and AutoScenery and ScenPro with ready-made templates and streetlights, towers, and other data from OpenStreetMaps and nationwide building footprints we have a timely need for some “filler”.

I’m thinking that it would be nice if we had a handful of downtown or central business districts with high and low rise buildings with another handful of sports stadiums and domes to make each city center unique. An example would be New Orleans with the tall buildings at the river’s edge with the Mercedes Superdome in the middle of downtown. Or maybe Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis, Houston, Chicago, etc.

It could be that we are still one release away from the killer program that generates 3D graphics from a Google map or something similar.

    Ray

This could be a simple, yeah sure, program from a creative graphics artist and introduced as payware by a 3rd party to kick start a bunch of us novices into expanding the neo dlc areas to our own backyards or home states.

I would pay for something like this with a few drag and drop graphic items like, various sized parking lots, both low and high resolution, schools, bus barns, shopping centers, golf courses, casinos, strip centers with tall signs, large box stand-alone stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Bass Pro Shops, Walmart complexes with gas station, shoe stores, burger joints and parking lots ready to twist, turn, and drop into our backyards, or just down the road.

Maybe a selection of community water towers, cell phone and TV towers, power generating stations, and a couple of nuclear power plant cooling towers with steam flowing. The list just lies on and on.

A follow up release could be airport related with a slew of static airplanes, terminals, hangars, signage, etc. a few animated ramp rats might be a hit.

Just day dreaming, as I wait for a helicopter.

  • Ray, I think we already have 2 killer programs (FSCloudPort & AeroScenery) and if they evolve in 2019, we will see another 2 big steps forward in DIY scenery.

FSCloudPort basically owns the tsc file / unique 3D objects and AeroScenery owns the ortho files and toc files. Nick already has the vision to add more auto-cultivation to AeroScenery in 2019. If Spit40 can add some additional object libraries to FSCloudPort (see post suggestion below), then placing stadiums, water towers, etc will be as easy as creating airports. These guys do have day jobs, so like FS2, patience is required.

  • Ken,

While I agree that AeroScenery and fsCloudPort will most likely keep getting better and better, I don’t see them being the one to generate a cluster of downtown building or a shopping center or Walmart complex, or a collection of sports complexes.

There is good possibility that a few of the individual objects will eventually fine their way into the already outstanding fsCloudPort.

This is why I think it would be better for a 3rd party payware, or even freeware, to come forth.

  • Ray, I would love to see this feature in the future. A map editor type program like FsCloudport, where you can just place, position and it automatically writes a TSC file for you. That would be a dream come true. It can take a long time just to retexture a model in preparation for converting to AF2, finding geo coordinates, having to rotate object so its positioned properly etc. I would love to see the 3D car models and extra airport objects added to FsCloudPort but as Ken said "these guys have day jobs" same here, however I spend all my free time on this simulator ^^. Side note, I remember seeing that FsCloudPort became overwhelmed and crashed (or something like that?) when a created airport had too many models added to it. So maybe adding cars and other objects would be something that would have to be kept minimal. But again who would be crazy enough to map out a parking lot.. This guy. Second side note, just adding Walmarts would make immersion way better, because they are everywhere!! ^^

  • I can overcome the maximum object limitations on FSCP. There is no fundamental obstacle. Just a bit maxed out with the day job right now. Equally i can add more object libraries. larrylynx offered me a load of airport objects to build in and i'll get to them at some point soon hopefully.

  • Phil, please also includes ZoSoChile's towers (radio towers, water towers, etc) when you find time to expand your object libraries in FSCP or if you decide it would be easier to create a new site "FSCloudCities" that generates a non-airport TSC file anchored in the middle of a town/city.

A separate city TSC file might provide better flexibility versus cramming everything into a single airport TSC file.

Actually, wouldn't that cure the max object limitation in most cases - just keep track of how large the tsc file is getting and spin off from an airport based tsc to a lat lon based tsc for the additional items.

I don't know if it's could be useful, but is it possible to do something in Aerofly with that ?

    https://github.com/vvoovv/blender-osm

It is very useful already, but it seems to be one more upgrade away from what we would like to see. I think it will be the Pro model that does most of what we are seeking.

It sounds like a great idea, although I wish I was better at making/texturing 3d models (I've been improving since the towers). Again these are "basic" looking. I've made quite a few helicopter landing pads that I plan sharing real soon.
